The 24-70 f/2.8 (I or II) is excellent as an indoor event lens. The extra stop is a big help indoors; and if, like many event photographers, you carry two cameras, it pairs very well (as Tim indicates) with the 70-200mm f/2.8. The 24-105, OTOH, is at its best as an outdoor "walking around" lens.

If you're taking pictures of moving subjects with little light, the F2.8 will do better as it will give you shorter shutter times with the larger aperture. The F4 is a little harder to use as the zoom range is pretty compressed. I own both the 24-105 F/4 L IS and the 24-70mm f/2.8L II.
While some photographers may find the 24-70mm f/2.8 II lens to be a game-changer, others may not be as satisfied with its performance. However, based on my personal experience and extensive research, I can confidently say that the 24-70mm f/2.8 II lens is indeed an excellent investment for any professional or serious amateur photographer.
